Emergency lighting is always important when the lights go out in an emergency. For example, California residents deal with rolling blackouts, and the Midwest and south have to deal with severe weather that can disrupt their lighting source. At one time, flashlights and lanterns were only essential for certain aspects of life, such as:

  • Campgrounds
  • Construction sites
  • Crime scenes
  • Garages
  • Mines
  • Workshops

Today, every household could benefit from mobile lighting. However, knowing which one is best for you can be difficult. The decision of the type to get is determined by the circumstances you have.

  • Flashlights – ideal in cases where you’re always on the move and can’t carry bulky items.
  • Lanterns – Better light source for a large area and have room to pack and store it.

Need a bit of help in deciding which one is best for you and your situation?

Flashlights vs. Lanterns: They Don’t Work the Same Way Besides Offering Light

A Look at Flashlights

Traditional flashlights only offer one direction light – to cast the light beam in one direction but over an extended area. Flashlights use specially-created lenses or reflectors that ensure the light focuses on one direction, producing the “hotspot of light”.

Lepro Portable Handheld LED Flashlight PR120027 2 Pack

In most cases, you hold the device in your hands. Flashlight manufacturers have realized the limitations of traditional flashlights, creating accessory mounts that allow people to place the light on their heads, arms, chest, helmet, etc. These accessories are usually clip-on that can be put on walls, packs, etc. There are also magnetic accessories that will stick to a metallic surface.

A Look at Outdoor Lanterns

On the other hand, lanterns produce light that goes in every direction. Lanterns have an LED or bulb that lights up an entire area. In most cases, they have a handle on the top for easy carrying. In the past, a glass-enclosed lantern included a candle or was powered by fuel. While some of those are still made today, they are not as common. Today, most get their power from batteries, the sun or electricity.

Lepro LED Camping Lantern Rechargeable, 1600LM, 4 Light Modes, 4400mAh Power Bank, IPX4 Waterproof, Perfect Lantern Flashlight for Hurricane Emergency, Hiking, Home and More, USB Cable Included

Newer lanterns use an LED or incandescent light source.

Simply put, the main difference between the two types include how the LED or bulb releases light. The light intensity is gauged in lumens. While both a lantern and flashlight can have the same lumen, the light output, how that light is used and their benefits are not the same.

2 Key Advantages of Flashlights

  • Precision Control – Most people still go with handheld flashlights because it allows them to manipulate where the light needs to be shined. For instance, it can help with quickly carrying out a task or flagging someone. For too long, these were the reasons flashlights were used. Today, flashlight designs include light output differences, hands-free, flood, and spotlight options.
  • Portability – Flashlights offer mobility, allowing you to inspect anything immediately. Flashlights, often known as Every Day Carry (EDC) lights, are always available to be used but carried discretely in pockets is not always feasible. However, minute sizes of EDCs are available and can be stored in cars, bags or other places. Micro-flashlights are ideal even if a person has a cell phone that has a light on it.

Advantages of Camping Lanterns

Lanterns are pretty useful in cases of blackouts, as they will light up an entire space or the outside in the dark. It gives you the ability to do the things you need in the dark that light is necessary for – cooking, reading, etc. Directional light, which flashlights produce, does not offer this ability. Lanterns can be used at campsites or in tents, lighting up a large area of space (something flashlights cannot do). You can also do what you want without holding a flashlight.

You want lanterns that are durable, long-lasting and emit a bright light while withstanding the most brutal elements.

Lanterns are great for when an emergency arises, and there is no power available. This kind of lighting can last much longer than actual flashlights, as they don’t consume as much power as quickly. If the power is out, you don’t know how long you’ll need the lantern to work, so getting a lantern with a long run time is essential.

Lanterns, which produce a softer lighter, provide stability and offer enough reflection that light up an entire surface. LED lanterns also do not generate a lot of heat, making them safe to be around pets and children even in the space is crowded. While some powerful LED lanterns generate heat, the manufacturer will use a material that causes it to dissipate and keep you from being burnt.

Lepro 1000lm Camping Light with Flashlight Combo

If you want the best of both options, Lepro has designed its 1000lm camping light to become a flashlight and lantern. It comes with two detachable flashlights that you can use as a lantern. You can use the hook to put the lantern up so it can illuminate an entire area. The flashlights have a magnetic bottom that works together as a mobile lamp. The camping light can be useful for all kinds of reasons, meeting the need for a torch and lantern during a camping, fishing and hiking trip.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could walk outside in the dark and see as you do in the light? Unfortunately, that is not the case, and lights are a necessity to move around when the sun goes down. When the lights go out, you need to find some source of light such as candles, matches and flashlights. However, emergency lanterns are ideal when you suddenly find yourself without power.

Most people know what their disaster survival kits need, but emergency lanterns are often an overlooked necessity. Emergency lanterns are necessary, but there are all kinds of them on the market. How do you know which emergency lantern will work for you and your family?

What should you consider when looking for emergency lanterns for your emergency kit?

5 Factors to Consider in Emergency Lanterns

  • Battery Backup Time – When you see the phrase “battery backup time”, it means how long the lamp will work at full brightness and won’t fluctuate with a full battery. A full battery has an average backup time of four to eight hours. If you find one that offers 10 or more hours, then you really need to look at that model.
  • Battery Charging Time – It should take no longer than 10 hours for a lantern to be fully charged and give up to 15 hours of battery backup.
  • Charging Option – Be sure to find out what charging option comes with the lamp. Can it be used with the grid and solar power? Choose the lantern that best fits your needs. It’s always best to find one that will work with both options. If you go with the solar option, be sure it comes with a solar panel.
  • LEDs – There are so many reasons why you should consider getting LED lantern lights – low power, stronger light intensity, extended lifetime, etc. If you go with LED lanterns, be sure it’s a rechargeable lantern light.
  • Light Intensity – How many LEDs a lantern has directly correlate to the lamp’s brightness? There are tons of LEDs with various intensities on the market. Even if two lamps have the same number of LEDs, the light intensity may differ. Make sure to find out what the light intensity is of each considered lantern. If you plan to use a lantern for a study lamp, you want at least 450 lumens of intensity. If you plan to brighten an entire room, you want 1,700 lumens of light intensity.

5 Brands of Emergency Lanterns Worth Serious Consideration

LE Rechargeable 1000 Lumen LED Camping Lantern Torch

It’s essential to have both a lantern and flashlight on hand in cases of emergency, and the LE LED Camping Lantern provides both in one. This is one of the best lanterns on the market, as it offers five light modes, comes with a 3,600mAh power bank that allows you to charge your phone, and has an IPX4 waterproof rating. The lantern will brighten a large swath of area and is rechargeable.

When it comes to its flashlight capability, you can brighten up to 1,650 feet of the area where you point it at. It also has a red hazard light that will flash when you’re in trouble.

The lantern and flashlight get a 1,000-lumen brightness, which is extremely bright – practical when there is no other light anywhere else, and you need to move around the area.

There is a power bank built-in to charge your smartphone in case of emergency, but its primary light only offers four hours’ worth of light. On the other hand, the side light provides up to 12 hours.

GearLight 2-Pack LED Lantern with Magnetic Base

GearLight is a two-pack LED lantern with the novel COB LED design that gives off more light than you’d see with the standard 30 LED. Not so shabby for a product that uses three AA batteries.

There are many things that make GearLight so great:”

  • Its light capacity can last up to 12 hours
  • It’s easily transportable, as it weighs less than a soda can
  • It’s weather-resistant
  • Extremely durable, handling tiny drops and bumps
  • Comes with a magnetic base
  • Has a hook so you can attach it to where you need to
  • Has a one-year return guarantee

Goal Zero Lighthouse 600

If you need high-quality light products, Goal Zero is a brand worth looking at. The manufacturer provides products that include flashlights, lanterns and solar panels. If you want an emergency lantern, then the Lighthouse 600 with a hand-crank function is the way to go. This crank lantern is better than most because of its size, simplicity and durability. Cranking it for 60 seconds will give you 10 minutes of low light.

However, you can also use a USB cable to charge the lantern’s internal battery. Goal Zero made sure to install a 5,200mAh battery that is also available to charge smartphones, tablets, etc.

The only drawback is that the Lighthouse 600 only offers 2.5 hours at 400 lumens, but its dimmable light settings can extend that to 48 hours of light time.

When you have a real emergency, give the lantern a crank, use a portable solar panel and connect a phone to it.

LE 1000 Lumen Rechargeable LED Camping Lantern with Dimmer

LE designed this lantern to look like a lantern but does not have a built-in flashlight feature. It comes with a 4,400mAh power bank that lets you charge your smartphone.

One notable feature of this lantern is its 1,000 lumens of light, which can be a little bothersome to any campers nearby. If there is any emergency, this lumen amount can brighten up a considerable area. The sacrifice of such brightness nets you just 12 hours of light time. What are some notable features of the LE 1,000-lumen rechargeable LED Camping Lantern?

  • Rechargeable
  • Water-resistant
  • Four light modes
  • Dimmable feature to choose your brightness level
  • Two-year warranty

Vont 2-Pack LED Portable Camping Lantern

If you don’t need four lanterns, but need more than one, then Vont’s 2-Pack LED Portable Camping Lantern is worth looking at. It has a collapsible design that gives you the power to increase or decrease the light the lantern gives off. It comes with 30 bright LEDs that will cover 360 degrees of area. Best of all, it comes with batteries that can last at least 90 hours long.

This portable camping lantern is extremely lightweight, which is why it’s no surprise people often forget they have a lantern with them. Despite its ultra-lightweight, it’s comprised of aircraft-made material and has been dropped from 10 feet high to determine its durability. It’s designed to withstand the weather of all types and can be fully submerged in water without issues.

On top of that, Vont has made sure to include a Lifetime Warranty.

Warm summer nights are unlike any others – good friends, bonfires, barbecues and laughter – all make up this wonderful time of the year. However, it’s also a mysterious time, especially at night. Walking around without any light is a hazard – tripping over things like rocks, chairs, other people, etc. This is why camping lanterns came about – to give campers and other nighttime lovers some enjoyment when the sun goes down.

The only problem in finding a lantern is that you have to wade through the different manufacturers to find the right one for your particular situation and atmosphere. You also want to find a lantern that will work as an emergency tool and can be placed in a survival kit.

8 Aspects to Consider in a Camping Lantern

Light Output

The measurement of light output is in lumens, and the higher the lumens, the more brightness the lantern will emit. It’s important to note that not all lanterns are measured the same way. Some manufacturers will take the measurement at the bulb, with others measuring the exterior of the lanterns (or out the front).

However, the brighter the lantern is, the more energy it will use, which is many manufacturers designed their lanterns with multiple brightness modes. Some lanterns have lumens that begin at 40 and go all the way to 700 (brightest light). However, many lanterns have an average of 150 to 350 lumens.

Two key factors affect brightness – design and optics. Some lanterns offer enough light for a table but nothing else. Think about how much light you need for your area.

  • 100 or less lumen is ideal for a tent.
  • 200 lumens is ideal for a campsite
  • 300 or more lumens is ideal for a large campsite party

Weight and Size

A lantern’s output is not always dictated by its weight size. People who will be backpacking will do well with smaller lamps, but they produce a low output and weight ounces. This low light is good for eating along the trail or reading while lying down. Larger lanterns are usually heavier and can illuminate a huge area.

You also need to take into account your power source size and weight, which adds to the lantern’s weight. Without the power source, you don’t have a lantern.

Batteries

When looking at lanterns, look at the battery type – some use lithium and alkaline batteries, but not all will. You can also use lithium-ion rechargeable batteries to give your lantern its power. It’s important to know the difference between how these two types work:

  • Alkaline batteries – will lose battery capacity when exposed to below-freezing temperatures. If you use alkaline batteries, be sure to pack them in a sleeping bag or an inner pocket to keep the cold from draining their power.
  • Lithium batteries – will do better when the temperatures are colder.

Waterproof Camping Lanterns

Some manufacturers have designed their lanterns to be completely waterproof, but some lanterns are only water and/or splash resistant. Make sure to understand the difference between these standards. They are known as the International Protection Marking and designate a number to how much water the lantern can withstand before it no longer works.

For example, an IPX-0 rating means no protection from water is offered. An IPX-8 rating means there is some protection and can be submerged in no more than three meters of water. For most outdoor situations, an IPX-4 rating will work (and is protection from splashing).

Hanging Camping Lanterns

When buying a lantern, do you want to hang it up somewhere high to illuminate more coverage? If so, you need to find a lantern with a clip, hook or loop that you can hang from a pole or tree.

Ease of Use

Find a lantern that makes it easy to turn on and off. You never want to fumble in the dark after a day of driving to turn on the light. Avoid over-complicated lanterns with codes and tiny knobs.

Portable Camping Lanterns

If you plan on engaging in several night activities, you want camping lights you can transport and move around with.

Adjustability

Be sure to find a lantern that offers a stable base and legs you can adjust to remain steady on uneven ground. Creativity will be a necessity if you find yourself on the rutted ground.

Other Notable Features of Camping Lanterns to Look For

  • Flashlight mode
  • Collapsible Lanterns
  • Device charger

When you look for a lantern for your next excursion, you will be overwhelmed by the sheer number of them on the market. While every factor is essential, the lumen output and power source are the two most important to consider. From there, you can decide on the weight, size, and various side features offered by the manufacturer.

After learning how to choose camping lanterns, I highly recommend LED camping lanterns from Lepro. Lepro provides high-quality camping lights with detachable flashlights, USB cables, or batteries to meet your different needs in camping.

Overnight camping trips demand a high-quality camping lantern to brighten the area you’ll be staying in. You want a lantern that provides enough illumination that you won’t be tripping over things when moving around. You want a lantern that’s powerful enough so you can cook and read in the dark and can also withstand possible damage from drops or accidental hits.

With so many lantern manufacturers to choose from, you may feel overwhelmed and unsure of what lantern is best. How can you know what lantern you need?

14 Factors to Consider in a Camping Lantern

  • Alkaline or Rechargeable Batteries? Do you want batteries you need to change out continually, or do you want rechargeable batteries instead?
  • Camping Trip – Will you be backpacking, car camping or family camping?
  • Casing – How strong of a case are you looking for?
  • Dimmer or Set Lighting – Do you need a light that provides ambient lighting? Do you want a lantern that can be used for many reasons?
  • Insect Repellant – Will the lantern attract bugs or repel them?
  • Lighting Area – Do you need a small amount of space to be lightened up, or do you want a 360-degree light area?
  • Manual Crank – Do you want a lantern you have to crank to generate the power?
  • Lumens – How much brightness do you need?
  • MAH Battery Capacity – How long do you want the battery to last you?
  • Portable or Static – Do you desire a lantern that can be ported from one place to another or remain in place?
  • Power Bank – Will your power bank be sufficient enough to handle charging other electronics such as mobile phones, tablets, etc.?
  • Purpose – What purpose will the lantern be used for – inside or outside the tent, or both?
  • Solar-Powered – Will you be able to charge the internal batteries?
  • Weight Size – Will you be doing a lot of walking or will you arrive at a campsite and stay there mainly?

Best Choice for Different Types of Camping Lanterns

What Types of Lanterns can be Used for Camping?

  • Battery Operated Camping Lanterns
  • Candle Camping Lanterns
  • Fuel-burning Camping Lanterns
  • Rechargeable Camping Lanterns
  • Solar-powered Camping Lanterns

What are the most common kinds of lanterns that you can choose from? They are battery-powered, rechargeable, manual crank, solar-powered, and fuel-dependent lanterns. Some of the more popular models currently on the market include:

Battery-Powered Lanterns (Lepro)

Lepro offers a battery-operated lantern that is lightweight and portable, whether you’re just camping or going hiking. It comes with a metal handle on top and a hook for the bottom so that it can be hung however you need it. With an IPX4 water-resistance rating, it can be used any time it rains or snow. It uses 3 D alkaline batteries and can last up to 12 hours with 1,000-lumen settings.

This Lepro product gives users four lighting modes – flashing, full brightness, warm white and white – to meet any lighting requirement you could have. It can be used in emergencies or when you’re just camping or hiking.

Candle Lanterns (GSI)

Candle lanterns are known to produce a plethora of heat since they use candles, which is why you must be particularly careful when using them. They are also known to produce a soft, romantic, relaxing light. However, they are considered an outdated source of light power.

GSI Outdoors Blue Candle stands at 8 inches tall and uses a candle that you light to give you illumination. GSI has a two-inch hanging loop so that you can place it up on a pole or branch. GSI designed its candle lantern with enamelware to combine practicality and aesthetics into one product. Due to its robust design, it can easily withstand drops and falls.

Gas Camping Lanterns (Balight)

The Balight Mini Gas Lantern is comprised of corrosion-resistant stainless steel material with an aluminum alloy and heat-resistant glass that ensures its durability and won’t shatter. Balight designed it with a unique high-energy piezoelectric ignition system, ensuring it will light every time you need it to. There is also a hanging chain on the lamp so that you can make it as long or short as you need.

The lantern can reach a 60lux brightness, which is plenty of light when needed.

Rechargeable Lanterns (LE)

LE came up with another LED camping lantern, but this time it’s a rechargeable lantern that can also be used as a detachable flashlight. It’s ideal for any situation, such as hiking, fishing, emergencies, hurricanes, etc. It also comes with a car charger and USB cable.

The LED Rechargeable Camping Lantern is built with a 1,800mAh lithium battery that is chargeable through a USB port. However, if you have no access to charging abilities, it needs 3 D batteries to work.

Most people want a lantern that works and has several functions. LE answered the call. This rechargeable lantern includes a built-in compass, detachable flashlights, metal handles, etc. Each flashlight has 200 lumens of light, with a lumen output of 20. The only difference between this product and others is that too much water can keep the product from working correctly or have it quit working altogether.

Solar-Powered Lantern (Tansoren)

Tansoren designed a versatile rechargeable camping lantern that offers three kinds of power supply methods:

  • Solar power
  • USB cable
  • Batteries (2 AA)

Thanks to the several ways you can charge the device, it’s often regarded as one of the best camping lanterns on the market. If you’re in a remote location where sunlight is an issue, you can use the small built-in power bank to help charge the lantern, phone or other devices. This is certainly ideal for when you don’t have any electrical outlets nearby.

Tansoren designed the solar lantern to be collapsible, ensuring it can fit easily into backpacks. Pull the handle up, and the light comes on. Adjust the level of brightness with a simple push. It really is that simple to use. If used on low power, the lantern can last eight hours.

Another significant aspect of this lantern? It’s made of military-grade material and is water-resistant.

One of the more essential camping tools in your arsenal is a lantern. After all, the light source will help you to prepare meals at dusk or when you need light to find your way around an area late at night. Camping lanterns have a plethora of benefits to them, and as such, there are many of them on the market to choose from. Some lanterns work off batteries, some use kerosene, and others are rechargeable, getting their power from the sun.

Many of these rechargeable lanterns offer an array of functionalities, such as mood-setting color options or power banks. They are also much more convenient than battery or kerosene lanterns, as there is no need to carry spare batteries or kerosene with you when camping.

The latest lanterns come with lightweight, fast-charging internal batteries that can also be used to charge other devices in cases of emergencies.

3 Factors to Consider with Rechargeable Camping Lanterns

Battery Life

When choosing a lantern, you want one that offers a long-lasting battery that can be used for hours away from any power source. Some manufacturers choose to use shorter battery lifespans than others, which is something to be mindful of when buying your lantern. If you’re unsure how long you’ll need light, it’s best to go for a lantern with the longest battery lifespan possible. You just never know what could happen.

Utility

Ask yourself how you plan to use the lantern. Will it be for decorative purposes, or will it be used to walk around in the dark? There are pros and cons to each consideration, but knowing how the lamp will be used helps narrow down the market choices.

Weight and Size

Lanterns are designed in various weights and sizes. Some are designed to brighten a whole area, while some are designed to be stylish. Plus, your lamp goes in with the rest of your camping gear, so you want it to be portable and lightweight. If you’re going to do a lot of walking, you definitely don’t want to be carrying a heavy lantern. However, if you plan to stay in one place for a period of time, then you want to go with something a little bigger that gives more light.

5 Popular Rechargeable Lanterns to Take on Your Next Camping Excursion

LE Rechargeable Camping Lantern

When the brightness is what you need for any outdoor event, the LE Rechargeable Camping Lantern can meet the need. The manufacturer ensured that this one provides up to 1,000 lumens, equating to a 75W halogen bulb. The lantern’s outer case will give off a soft light that can be changed from cool white, and warm white to neutral white. In flashing mode, all three can be used. The brightness is adjusted by pressing the button for a long time.

LE designed this rechargeable camping lantern to include a USB port so that USB charging devices like phones or laptops could be used for a short time. It also comes with a hook, allowing users to hang it up to brighten a bigger area of space. With an IP44 rating, the lantern can withstand water splashed on it – great for snow or light rainy days.

DARMAI Rechargeable Camping Lantern

You don’t want to be caught in the dark on a camping trip. The DARMAI rechargeable camping lantern is a multifunctional LED light that includes both lantern and torch modes that boost its flexibility. It comes with six light modes, including a red warning mode that can be used in emergencies.

DARMAI Rechargeable Camping Lantern

The manufacturer ensured it provided a lot of power, with 800 lumens in torch mode that can last a maximum of four hours. It can be seen for distances of 250 meters. It can run at 70LM for eight hours and 130LM for less than four hours as a lamp.

If you plan to do a lot of walking, you’ll want something else entirely because it’s a bit bulky to carry.

Harper Living Rechargeable Camping Lantern

If you’re looking for style, the Harper Living Rechargeable Camping Lantern brings out the 19th-century look in its water-resistant product. Designed with a 75-hour battery life, it’s ideal for anyone who plans to stay out for a long time. You can adjust the light’s brightness and warmth using the metal rotary button located at the lamp’s base, giving campers the opportunity to set up the device how they want.

Harper Living Rechargeable Camping Lantern

It also comes with a cable hanging rope so campers can hang it up over the campsite – great since this lantern is a bit heavier than other products on the market and is designed mainly for stationary use.

Nite Ize Radiant 314 Rechargeable Lantern

This is the powerhouse of all lanterns with all it provides at an affordable price. It’s not very heavy, with a weight of 10 ounces, and doesn’t take up a lot of space in a bag. Change the light color to a yellow ambient light for nighttime use and turn it bright white when necessary. Use the hook at the top to hang over your campsite or tent.

Nite Ize Radiant 314 Rechargeable Lantern

If the battery in your tablet or smartphone needs charging, Nite Ize made sure to offer ports for charging them.

Ozark Trail Rechargeable Lantern

Walmart is responsible for the emergence of the Ozark Trail Rechargeable Lantern, which is quite reasonably priced compared to similar products on the market. This is the way to go when you need a budget-friendly camping lantern.

Ozark Trail Rechargeable Lantern

It offers a bright rechargeable light that produces 700 lumens, which can brighten up any tent or campsite and last up to 275 hours. It’s a solid model and offers an easy-to-use design that will rival other budget-friendly lantern lights currently on the market.
